Vine Tasting
In the Neszmély Wine Region, just a few kilometers from Tata, lies Baj-Szőlőhegy. In this picturesque setting, a handful of winemakers have come together to put this historically significant wine region back on the map. At the foot of the hill, a building designed by Jakab Fellner (one of our most prominent Baroque architects) was constructed in 1772, which later became the center of sparkling wine production in Tata in the early 20th century. The Esterházy Sparkling Wine Factory began operations in 1905, and thanks to modern French sparkling wine techniques, the sparkling wines produced in Tata became internationally recognized and sought after. The base wine necessary for sparkling wine production was provided to the Esterházys by the famous Baj-Szőlőhegy.
Thanks to the cooperation of the winemakers of Baj, wine lovers and visitors to the area can discover the cellars. The cellars have reopened their doors to visitors. Anyone looking to move can be captivated by the idea of cycling to Baj as part of a fun, easy bike tour.
During the tour, the small cellars nestled in the picturesque area of the Ászár-Neszmély Wine Region at the southern foothills of the Gerecse will be revealed to us. It is advisable and recommended to make an appointment or register for a tasting in advance, but we can expect to sneak a peek into the secrets of some family-owned cellars after a friendly invitation. The tasting tour is recommended for both groups of friends and those seeking romance.
It is worth starting the journey by bike towards the center of Tata and continuing toward Baj at the Baj junction! We will cross the railway, and then we can proceed along the bike path. As soon as we reach the Baj church, we can turn right onto Hegyi Road. This road leads toward the beautiful southern side of the Gerecse, and from the panoramic road running parallel to its foot, we will have unparalleled views of the Gerecse Mountain range and the Tata basin. After approximately 1 km, we will reach an intersection where we can find cellars in both directions.
